Cairns is a regional city in Far North Queensland, Australia. The city was named after William Wellington Cairns. It was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas. It later developed into a railhead and major port for exporting sugar cane, gold and other metals, minerals and agricultural products from surrounding coastal areas and the Atherton Tableland region. As of 2010, the population is approximately 150,920.

Cairns is located about 1,700 km from Brisbane, and about 2,420 km from Sydney by road. It is a popular travel destination for foreign tourists because of its tropical climate. It serves as a starting point for people wanting to visit the Great Barrier Reef and Far North Queensland.

Cairns Shore Excursion: Barron Gorge National Park and Kuranda National Park Waterfall and Rainforest Small-Group Tour more_vert
    $155.00 AUD Book
    close
While you're in port in Cairns, take a 5-hour shore excursion to explore the rainforests and waterfalls surrounding the city. By 4-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll travel through Barron Gorge National Park and Kuranda National Park, part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage site. Ideal for those with limited time in Cairns who want to see some of the area's most spectacular scenery, this tour provides an exclusive-access pass to visit sections not usually open to the public. This small-group tour is limited to 13 participants, ensuring you'll see some of Tropical North Queensland’s hidden gems with personalized attention from a guide. Select a morning or afternoon tour when booking.

After pickup from the cruise terminal by your guide, your tour starts by heading north to Barron Gorge National Park in Cairns. Stop at Surprise Falls, a 797-foot-high (243-meter) waterfall set in the lower Barron Gorge.
Continue climbing the Lamb Range to the west of Cairns, and enjoy views over the city and out toward Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Then head to Lake Morris and Copperlode Dam—Cairns’ water supply, which is surrounded by World Heritage rainforest–clad mountains. You'll have time to stretch your legs and snap photos from the lookout prior to crossing the dam wall.
With your exclusive-access permit, head into areas not typically open to the public, away from the crowds. In your 4WD vehicle, wind through some of the most amazing rainforest landscapes in the region and over the Great Dividing Range, one of the longest mountain ranges in the world. Continue through the rainforest, crossing several creek systems and stopping at a boardwalk for an interpretive overview of the rainforest from your guide. Here you will be introduced to the Clohesy River Fig, one of the most impressive fig trees in the tropics.
Next, leave the lushness of the Wet Tropics and enter the beginning of Australia’s mighty savannah country, marveling at the rapid change in the forest types and scenery. Back on paved roads, make your way to the village of Kuranda, from where you'll continue to the upper Barron Gorge National Park. Stop at Wrights Lookout for photo ops overlooking the gorge and back toward the coastal plains and Cairns. Then take a short drive to the Barron Falls viewpoint to see what is possibly the most famous waterfall in northern Queensland.
Head back toward Cairns via a drive through more of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area on the Kuranda range, stopping at Henry Ross Lookout with views of the northern beach suburbs of Cairns and out to the Coral Sea. Your shore excursion ends with return to your ship.

After which you stop for a hearty lunch at one of the Tableland's best cafes before making your way across the Tablelands to Ravenshoe. On the way, be treated to a view from the Millaa Millaa lookout where, on a clear day, the spectacularly panoramic view is from Atherton to the Innisfail Coast. Just past Ravenshoe you will take in the rapidly changing scenery as you approach the gateway to the outback and the famous Millstream Falls, Queensland's widest single drop waterfall.
Winding your way back over the Herberton ranges and towards a more tropical rainforest landscape, to your final stop for the day the spectacular Mount Hypipamee Crater. This one of a kind volcanic phenomenon is the result of a massive gas explosion leaving a crater over 196-foot (60m) in diameter and twice as deep. The path continues around to the Dinner Falls with the lowest tier being the most spectacular.
You will then be returned to your place of pickup via the highway to Cairns.
This tour does involve some walking that requires a medium level of fitness.

The 40 minute Great Barrier Reef Flight is the perfect way to see and  gain a full appreciation of the immensity of the Great Barrier Reef.
The best time to fly is between 09:30 a.m. and 02:30 p.m. to see the wonderful colours of the Great Barrier Reef. The 30 minute flight is adequate to gain a feel for the size and structure of the Great Barrier Reef, the 40 minute flight adds that little bit more for those wanting to snap those extra few pics to their portfolio.

Daintree Air have been showing clients the very best of the Great Barrier Reef for over 35 years. We know the best places to view from the air, snorkel from the surface and or dive from below the surface. It has taken us half a life time to learn just a little about the Great Barrier Reef. Let us pass this knowledge and information onto you.
The experienced team will advise you on the optimum time for viewing and photographing the the magnificent aqua blue and opal like colors of the Great Barrier Reef. Flights organised between 9:30am and 2:30pm will always be premium times to fly. At certain times a year viewing the reef outside these hours can be disappointing as shadows and reflections in the ocean caused by low sun, partial cloud cover and haze can limit the viewing quality.
Your hotel pick up will be organised for approximately 40-minutes prior to your flight. All passengers will have a window seat. A flight brief is conducted in the air conditioned terminal using maps to show where the flight will go on the day. The direction of the flight is determined by the prevailing winds, the tides and of course the weather conditions.
The route flown will usually take in Green Island, Upolu Cay, Oyster, Arlington, Vlassof and Michaelmas Reefs as well as views of Cape Grafton, False Cape, Double Island and the Northern Beaches of Cairns including Palm Cove.

Green Island Day Trip from Cairns Including SNUBA or SNUBA Doo Experience more_vert
    $227.00 AUD Book
    close
Explore the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef on a day trip to Green Island from Cairns, including an amazing and easy experience with Snuba SNUBA® or SNUBA Doo® Power Snorkeling ! SNUBA® is a shallow water diving system whereby customers can explore underwater up to 3 metres. No need to wear heavy equipment, the air tanks float on the surface and you breathe through a normal scuba regulator mouthpiece. The SNUBA Doo® Power Snorkeling is when you remain on the surface by wearing a buoyancy jacket and using the SNUBA® raft to breath through a scuba regulator mouth piece. You'll go into the water with your guide and be surrounded by the colorful fish and coral of the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, you'll have plenty of time to see more sights when snorkeling from the beach, taking a glass-bottom boat cruise or walking in the rainforest.

The coral cay of Green Island is located in a marine national park covered by lush rainforest and sandy white beaches. Magnificent coral reefs are home to colorful fish, giant clams, turtles, sea anemones and other marine life.
Both the SNUBA® and The SNUBA Doo® are easier than snorkeling. No training or dive experience are necessary, and there is no heavy bulky equiqment.
SNUBA® was created for those who enjoy the simplicity of snorkeling and would like to experience the wonders of breathing underwater, a unique, patented shallow water diving system, bridging the gap between snorkelling and scuba diving.
SNUBA Doo® Power Snorkeling is when you remain on the surface by wearing a buoyancy jacket and using the SNUBA® raft to breath through a scuba regulator mouthpiece.  It is a great way to get your confidence up in the water.  It is easier than snorkelling because you won’t get any water into your mouth, (which may happen with the snorkel tube).  You will also be close to the SNUBA® raft for additional surface support.
Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from participating in optional in-water activities.
In the morning, you’ll check in at the centrally-located Reef Fleet Terminal where your SNUBA® and The SNUBA Doo® time slot will be confirmed. Then board a luxurious high-speed catamaran to cruise the 15 nautical miles (27 kilometers) to Green Island.
On the way to Green Island, your crew will give a snorkeling demonstration and suggestions on how to make the most of your time at the island. Choose from a variety of additional activies including glass-bottom boat tours, supervised snorkeling trips and rainforest walks.
Aboard the catamaran, you’ll be provided with morning tea or coffee, a licensed bar offers beverages all day (own expense), and a buffet lunch is served for those who have chosen the option.
If you’d like to visit Green Island Resort, you can make use of their facilities–including showers, changing rooms, restrooms, shopping and equipment hire. Or take a short walk one of the trails in the national park. Canoes, sailboards, surf skis, beach chair and umbrella rentals are also available.
You’ll be returned to Cairns around 5pm to end the tour.

Check-in is on-board after which you may enjoy a coffee or tea with delicious muffins. All equipment is provided and your crew will assist you with fitting the correct size snorkel or dive equipment bringing this to you. Wet suits or stinger suits are hung on your own personal hanger.
Departing Cairns, the safety briefing explains the various safety systems and procedures on-board. A snorkel demonstration follows to ensure all are aware of the equipment, health risks of snorkelling, things to be aware of at the reef, how the day will run and where to find crew. Then the scuba briefing details in water skills.
Arriving at the world-famous Michaelmas Cay, there is a site briefing then you gather your equipment, organise a buoyancy vest or noodle, collect your suit, then make the short ferry trip to Cairn’s largest sand cay island. Experienced or novice, the calm waters of the beach is the best location to commence your guided snorkel tour. The tour guides depart in small groups, out over shallow reef waters towing a life ring. Your guide will assist you with your equipment and although the high-quality mask and snorkel are easy to fit, novice snorkellers have more time in the shallow water to make final adjustments. Introductory divers commence their dive from Seastar under the supervision of our caring instructors. After your dive or snorkel excursion, there is ample time to revisit the reef with you snorkel buddy.
With two good hours of diving or snorkelling, you have an appetite. Feast on a delicious buffet of hot and cold dishes, including vegetarian options with plenty of salads, fresh fruits, and bread. Cold drinks are also available for purchase. When finished Seastar departs for Hastings Reef on the very outer of the Great Barrier Reef.
A very different reef to Michaelmas. Again, a site briefing is given before you re-enter the water. Snorkelling and diving commence from Seastar, the guided snorkel tours first, then diving where experienced certified divers may travel to the “Wild Side” in the tender and return dive to the Seastar. Afterwards, there is ample time to again revisit this reef with you snorkel buddy.
Confidence gained at Michaelmas Cay, snorkellers are often taken to the “Wild Side” abundant with vibrant fish and coral, deep coral canyons, giant coral formations, colourful reef fish, anemones, sea turtles, cheeky little reef sharks and deep water.
With another two good hours of snorkelling and diving, it is time to return to Seastar. While enjoying the waiting afternoon tea waiting with delicious cakes and fresh fruit, the safety head count is conducted and with all signed back on-board, Seastar returns to Cairns.

Travel in style in your own privately driven vehicle with a home grown local at the wheel to give you the best insights into the region. Start your day with a complimentary morning beverage before escaping cairns to eat your way across this tropical paradise.  Be sure to collect your favourite foods along the way and store them in our onboard fridge, because our last stop is at our favourite lookout. Here we roll out the blanket to watch the sun set over the 800 meters in elevation and enjoy the best food of the day all over again.

We meet you at your accommodation in your privately appointed vehicle at 0800.
Your day begins with a short drive to a local coffee shop where we purchase for you, your choose of Tea, Coffee or Fresh Juice.
We then begin our escape out of Cairns up the Kuranda Range to the Jaques Coffee Plantation. The Jaques Family were one of the first family's to try and establish coffee in Australia. What they have achieved to date has been far from easy, suffering multiple major set backs. But in true Aussie spirit they have never lost sight of there goals. To Grow, Roast and Produce award winning coffee on site. They take there scones almost as serious as there coffee, so be sure to take the opportunity to enjoy one in the gardens.
We continue up the hill a little to Mt Uncle Distillery. Another family run business kicking goals all over the world. Their Limited Release Whiskey received a gold medal in the Single Cask, Single Malt, Whiskey category at the World Whiskeys Awards in London. The good news here is, You get to taste as many sprites as you like, as we sit and watch all the fun.
Don't worry, if the half hour drive to Gallo's Dairyland doesn't sober you up, there is a great lunch menu on offer as well as hand made Cheese & Chocolate. Don't forget to head out and say hi to the Animal Nursery. If your lucky you might just catch the Rotary Dairy in actions.
Hopefully you've paced yourself and not over eaten as our next stop is the Nerada Tea Estate. Tea in Tropical North Queensland dates back to 1882 when the four Cutten brothers discover Bingil Bay, establishing Australia's first commercial tea plantation. Over the years the business was hit by Cyclones, sold and moved to its current location. Here we can view the factory floor and witness the process from fresh green tea leaf to Australia's fineness black tea. Just outside the factory is a popular locations to spot the elusive Lumholtz's Tree-Kangaroo.
After another cuppa and some more home made scones, we make our way to our final stop. One of our favourites. The Gillies Range Look Out. This look out is found down a dirt road, through some rainforest, over some hills. Look out for a wild pig on your way there. Here we lay out the blanket and open up the fridge to enjoy the fresh foods you've purchased through the day while enjoying the view over the 800 metres in elevation from the Cairns Hinterland down to the coast. On a clear down, we can see the sun shining on the ocean. The only thing left to do now is to watch the sun set and reflect on all the spoils of the day.
Now that your well into your food coma, relaxed and sleepy. We welcome you to nap (pillows and blankets provided) in the car for the hour drive back to cairns.

Start your day with a complimentary morning beverage before escaping cairns to explore your way through the most biodiverse region on earth. Enjoy the serenity of a Volcanic Crater Lake. Enjoy lunch on the veranda with a million dollar view of the tallest point in queensland. Finish the day, learning about how one Spanish man released his dream of living in his own castle, one he built by hand in the middle of the Rainforst.

We meet you at your accommodation in your privately appointed vehicle at 0700.
Your day begins with a short drive to a local coffee shop where we purchase for you, your choose of Tea, Coffee or Fresh Juice.
We begin our escape out of Cairns up the Gillies Range to the Lake Barrine Tea House. The Tea House was built during WWII by the defence force and used as a Convalescent home for injured defence members. Here we can enjoy a light breakfast on the balcony over looking the peaceful waters.

Full Day Rainforest 4WD Tour from Cairns more_vert

Experience the  World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics from a unique perspective with our ‘eco sensitive 4WD Safari. With only 6 other adventurers, be taken away from the mass marketed touristy areas, into a spectacular and ancient wilderness wonderland offering the most bio-diverse ecosystem in the world. Venture into ‘restrictive access’ areas where you'll find no other crowds or vehicles, no sealed roads, just the genuine ‘Land of the Giants’ as you discover the largest and most ancient rainforest trees and plants in the world. All while being entertained, amused and hopefully educated.
Your journey takes you to places Cairns locals know about and the tourists have not yet discovered. You will be taken through pristine Tropical Rainforest, over seven water crossings and enjoy lunch in a truly relaxing and tranquil setting. The afternoon takes you to the other side of the Great Dividing Range, Aussie Bush, The Outback, ice cream and a waterfall for a cool down.

Gain an insight to Northern Queensland's vast diversity without the crowds. Kevin will pick you up from your accommodation, introduce you to the other  adventurers and start you on a unique one day experience.
A short drive and you are out in the rainforest, enjoying the crystal clear water of Stoney Creek and a rainforest interpretive walk. Up the hill you climb, enjoying panoramic views of Cairns City and out to the Great Barrier Reef. Morning tea is served overlooking Lake Morris, a man made marvel, surrounded by Lambs Range a small part of the 900 000 hectares that makes up part of the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics. Through a locked gate, 4WD is locked and your journey into the vastness of the rainforest begins. Jurrasic Park is a statement heard often...
You follow a seldom used old logging track into the traditional land of the Tjapukai people. You are now travelling back in time, it is a living museum. Plants and animals that no longer survive any where else on the planet still inhabit this area. The rare Cassowary, the Boyd's Rainforest Dragon, Musky Rat Kangaroo and Giant Tree Fern are found nowhere but here.
Marvelling at the immenseness and natural beauty of the surrounds, you drive though five crystal clear streams and arrive at your lunch spot.
A buffet lunch is served Alfreso in the middle of the forest. The sounds of the wind, water and birds are your background music.
After lunch you take a boardwalk adventure. The biggest birds nest you will see, an amazingly beautiful water feature, a tree you think is the biggest you have ever seen, till you see the surprise at the end of the boardwalk. A 900 year old strangler fig tree. This tree has strangled, killed and eaten another tree. Definitely a jungle in here
After two more stream crossings the rainforest dissapears suddenly. Landscape and weather change dramatically. We are now in the Aussie Bush. Eucalyptus trees and giant termite mounds are the new features.
All of a sudden seemingly out of nowhere an ice cream shop appears. A complimentary ice cream is enjoyed. With 45 flavours of hand made ice creams all produced from locally grown fruit, choosing one is always difficult. A large selection of locally made souvenirs are available here as well.
Your afternoon break is followed by another landscape change. On the way to Davies Creek Falls for an afternoon cool down, you touch on the edge of the Aussie Outback. The waterfall itself is amazing, but it's the secret natural rock pool at the top which is the surprise.
The pool is so incredible that a beer commercial has been filmed there. What more of a recommendation do you need?
No Aussie adventure would be complete without seeing a wallaby or 200. The aptly named Pretty Faced Wallabies are always photogenic.
